Entry for July 26, 2008
Nonie has been walking for months now and is really coordinated at getting up onto things, climbing onto little chairs and sitting in them, etc. No one at the park can believe she's only 13 months! She is just starting to get going with some words too - she says "Edie" (evie), Dada, Mama, Ooee (Lucy), ba (banana), muk (milk), cat, woof (dog sound), voom (car) and shakes her head no a lot! she is getting more into that "terrible twos" phase where she has definite ideas about what she wants. She's the best eater of the three of them by far. Overall, she's just extremely cute!

Nonie belly-crawled for the first time today to get Whoozit! She is such a cheery, smiley little girl. We are so lucky.

Lucy is off at ballet right now with Evie. She loves ballet, wearing leotards of course, eating Panda Puffs and playing imaginary games.

Evie is into all things science and animals - birds, rainforest animals, etc.

i can't believe i haven't written since little noelle (no-no, nonie, noey, baby nana) was born. she is a wonderful baby - so sweet and loving. she loves her big sisters and loves laughing at them. she rolled over from back to front at exactly 4 months and had already been rolling front-back. she is very smiley and never fusses unless she is hungry or tired. evie and lucy love her so much. they enjoy making her laugh.

Entry for March 06, 2007: funny Lu comments
Funny things Lu has said recently:

"Mommy, we didn't know you when you were little.... who was our mommy when you were little?"

and, watching Evie at tennis lessons, she was making the letters of her name with her body on the floor. Then she decided to do E-V-I-E and was having trouble with the E. She twisted her legs and arms and looked nothing like an E. I said I wasn't sure how that was an E and she said "Well Mommy it's a silent E"

I was just reading back some entries and noticed the one about Lucy getting upset about getting dressed in the morning. She is completely out of the "terrible twos" by now and, while she still has lots of opinions about things, has gotten so agreeable and easy going . Funny to think that wasn't so long ago.

Entry for February 19, 2007
We have been homebound after a week of snow, with school cancelled most of last week. We did some sledding, some playing in the snow (which was tough since it was all covered by a sheet of ice), but now we are all ready for the girls to be back at school! They have been great though. They play together so well. Granted, they fight a bit too, but they entertain each other for hours. Tonight Lucy requested that Evie read her bedtime stories. Evie's reading has gotten so fast. She can read simple stories at normal speed and is just about reading anything. She has also started learning to play the piano from Peek and can play two simple songs after her first lesson.
Lucy is full of her usual energy and wacky sense of humor. She wants to take dance next year, which I think she will love. I need to be better about writing down some of the cute and funny things they say. I will try from now on. Noelle continues to kick like crazy. At least in utero, she is the wiggliest of the three girls!

Entry for October 16, 2006
just found out that i'm pregnant today! i am excited, but also really worried about it after the last two pregnancies. i'm just trying to stay optimistic but realistic. it's funny, i definitely can tell - i am craving salty food much more than usual (usually it's all sweets) and have some extra saliva in my mouth if i don't eat. with evie and lu i craved olives each time. i go to the doctor thursday so hopefully he can help calm my worries.

evie and lu continue to be their wonderful selves. evie had a meltdown this week because she didn't get enough stickers at school (reward stickers) to get a prize. now she is more determined than ever to get stickers. she is so much like toby, with the same ability to be hard on herself and determined to do what's right, it's amazing to see how that is passed down to the next generation. all the kids at school wrote down what they wanted to be when they grown up and posted it on the wall. there were fire fighters, a bride, a super hero, etc. evie wrote "antumowoist" (entymologist), she is still very "into bugs". she is writing everything phonetically now and just read to me a short book the other day and really truly is reading. it is so exciting to see! i was so proud of her.

little lu is in a stage right now where she only wants to wear dresses with ballet shoes and tights. i'm not sure how this will fly when i tell her she can't wear it to school tomorrow. she is so funny and smiley and loving, and also a very strong willed little thing. i love when she snuggles up and says "you say mmmhmm and i say mmmntmmm" and then thumb bellies. she also likes to tell a story with me every night about babar, the wiggles, and the little einsteins and their adventures.

Both girls are doing well. Lucy is loving school, she was so happy to go after years of watching Evie go. We are still struggling with the potty, but I talked to her teachers about it and they are going to work on it with her. She is so enthusiastic - they call her "two Lucy" because she paints two of everything when everyone else just paints one.

Evie is loving school. She is exhausted on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons after a full day but she's getting used to it.
Entry for August 13, 2006
the girls are playing puppets with stuffed animals right now. teaching them yoga.
lu peed on the potty three times yesterday. evie is tying her shoes (double knots!) and starts kindergarten next week.

evie's favorite thing to do: tie my shoe, ride my bike and go swimming
lu's favorite thing to do: being a teacher (as they are playing right now). going for a walk.

evie's favorite name: ruby and greta
lu's favorite name: sarah and rosie

evie's favorite food: ham and cheese sandwich
lu's favorite food: cereal and peanut butter puffs and pb&j

worst food:
evie: the pasta with broccoli and chicken in it
lu: do you have a worst food? "uh, nope"

yesterday evie swam for the first time! it was so exciting. we went to thomas pool at the park and she just started doing it - pushing off and kicking and paddling, with her face in the water. this is the same girl who wouldn't even get her face wet a week ago, swim lessons are officially working!

and a week ago lucy pooped on the potty for the first time - let's just hope we can keep her doing it so that she can go to school in the fall...

Funny Evie story, April 25 2006
So recently Evie has been talking about both Jasper and Lucas (a friend from school) as her boyfriends. The other day in the car she said to me, "So I don't know what to do about this whole Jasper and Lucas thing... When I'm with Jasper I can't think about Lucas, and when I'm with Lucas, I can't think about Jasper... I guess we'll just have to all live together in the same house when I grow up... but then I'll have to get another girl to live in there too. Everyone can call it the crazy house!"

My Book List
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - by Ken Kesey. I would never have read it again if not for bookclub. I forgot how profound and strangely beautiful this book is. I also forgot how incredibly sexist and racist it is. Still, a really powerful story.

Prep - by Curtis Sittenfeld. This is a pretty thoughtless, beach-book type of book in a lot of ways but it was a good read and well written. I think it's a great portrayal of boarding school and, while the main character had a very different high school experience than I did, I think she captures the essence and even the mundane day-to-day life at boarding school really well.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. A page-turning memoir, fascinating view into a childhood of poverty, yet hopeful and uplifting. I'm still skeptical of memoirs after A Million Little Pieces, but this was good.

The Blind Assassin by Margaret Attwood. This was definitely first class literature. It reminded me a lot of Atonement, the way it was from the perspective of one sister who never had the chance to apologize to her sister for mistakes she had made. Beautifully written, a meloncholoy book, but I really enjoyed it. Stayed up late reading it.

Truth and Beauty. Ann Patchett. A beautiful memoir about friendship.

An Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy. Beautifully written, about a woman surviving cancer who suffers facial disfigurement.

Children's Books List
I thought it'd be a good idea to keep a list of all of the books that we have really enjoyed. Here are some of our favorites:

The Night Kitchen - by Maurice Sendak. Kind of a wacky, nonsensical, rhythmic book that both of the girls love. Lucy can read it over and over.

There was a Bold Lady who Wanted a Star - by Charise Mericle Harper. This was also a somewhat silly book, but I love the ending where you find out she wanted a star to give to her son in a jar so that it wasn't far away.

Art Dog - by Thatcher Hurd. Another wacky book, lots of bright colors, with an art dog detective. One of Daddy and Evie's favorites.

The Lorax - by Dr. Suess. I almost can't read it because it's too sad, but another Daddy/Evie favorite about the Lorax who protects the trees.

The Little Red Hen - by Byron Barton. This is Evie's favorite. She loves to act it out, where I am the red hen and she and Lulu are the little chicks.

There's a Wocket in My Pocket - by Dr. Suess. Another great one from the genius storyteller.

My Very First Mother Goose - by Iona Opie. A good classic, both girls loved it for learning nursery rhymes. The pictures are really cute too - Rosemary Wells (from Max and Ruby books) does the illustrations.

Alice and Greta - by Steven Simmons and Cyd Moore. Evie loved this tale about the good/bad witch. A good book for four-year olds.

Brother Juniper
Brother Juniper
Brother Juniper by Diane Gibfried . This is a great book about the power of giving. Would be good for a Sunday school lesson.

Zen Shorts (Caldecott Honor Book) (Hardcover) by Jon J Muth I loved this book for teaching simple lessons. Again, a great Sunday school book.

(Hello goodbye window by Norton Juster for To Read list,
Hula Lullaby (Hardcover) by Erin Eitter Kono to Read)

My Granny Went to Market by Stella Blackstone: A great round-the-world counting book. Fun, colorful illustrations

Queenie Farmer Had Fifteen Daughters by Ann Campbell: A funny tale about a mother raising 15 daughters
)

Dreams by Peter Spier. Lucy loved this picture book, where you look at clouds and turn the page to see what they children are imagining those clouds to be. She had fun guessing.

Monster Musical Chairs (MathStart 1) (Library Binding) by Stuart J. Murphy, Scott Nash Lucy is obsessed with this book. It's her "potty book" as she always wants to read it when she is sitting on the toilet! We have read this probably 10 times in three days.

Dont Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems. Lucy LOVED this book where a pigeon tries to convince you to let him drive the bus. The artwork is simple , with great expressions. A family favorite.

Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins. I found this rhyming book kind of annoying, but Lucy loves it. A good counting book.

Willy's Pictures by Anthony Brown. A monkey paints classic paintings but with gorillas in them. The girls loved it, a great way to introduce them to classic art.

Babar and the Succotash bird by Brunhoff - Lu has recently become obsessed with the Babar books. Warning: the mom dies in the first one, which is upsetting to her. Looking forward to getting more of these books.

Uno's Garden by Graeme Base - A story about the importance of keeping a balance between nature & humanity. Beautiful illustrations.

The Seven Silly Eaters by MaryAnn Hoberman - A funny story about a family of picky eaters. Great rhyming. Girls and I both enjoyed.

One potato, two potato DeFelice, Cynthia C. A funny story about an old man and woman who find a magic pot.

evie and lucy continue to play so well together. they spend hours playing mommy/baby, princess/queen, cinderellas (and i'm the stepsister)... lucy recently was talking about me havin ga baby in my belly (though she doesn't understand that i don't anymore) and said "i have a baby in my belly. you have a mommy in your belly for matching mommies, daddy has a daddy in his belly for matching daddies, evie has an evie in her belly for matching evies..." she's so funny. she's still very much in the terrible twos, we get lots of temper tantrums for getting dressed every morning or basically doing anything she doesn't want to do. and they are both so into everyone's favorite color. evie recently drew a picture at church and i was green, daddy was brown, she was pink and lulu was purple...

Entry for January 08, 2006 (and since july 2004)
July 13, 2004:
lucy, little coo, coobert, goose monster - lucy

started belly crawling just last week. every day she

is moving faster and faster around the house. (we are

in vemont for two weeks so she is learning on the

carpet, which is nice.) she makes coo-ing noises

(hence the name "little coo") but is a fairly quiet

little baby. everyone always says how much she looks

like patrick. she is beautiful with big blue eyes and,

aside from a fever last week, is such a healthy baby.

she is just starting to be interested in food other

than nursing.

evie, evers, pie guy, curly top, big sister - evie is

turning into a big kid before my eyes. she is talking

up a storm, and so independent. we dropped her off at

camp at basin harbor last week and she ran off without

looking back. everyone always says she is mature for

her age - and everyone always comments on her curly

hair... recently i asked evie what she wanted to be

when she grows up and she said "well, i might as well

be a doctor because i already have the kit." she is so

funny, she is always saying funny things like that.

she has loved being with her cousins these past two

weeks. she is also such a great big sister, always

helpful and sharing and not jealous of lucy.

august 15, 2004:

lucy is now 9 months. last night she said "cat", her

first word! she is crawling around (belly crawling)

all over and can pull herself up to standing (to get

to big sister's toys in the dollhouse.) she is still

quiet, she has saying more "nanana" and "bababa"

sounds. her hair is growing more and more and is a

light blonde. could be curly, we still don't know!

evie is getting to be such a big girl. she is so

wonderful with lucy. she just finished her swim

lessons and is now putting her face in the water,

kicking, blowing bubbles. she is very excited to start

school. when i was on the phone with my mom the other

day i asked if mom could come in to watch lucy on

evie's first day, since i am supposed to go with evie

that day. evie goes "no, mommy, you are supposed to go

home and i go to school all by myself!" clearly she is

ready for school! she is so funny, she always will

just spontaneously say "i'm small" or a number of her

little catch phrases. she is a very happy spirit. we

are so lucky to have two wonderful, wonderful girls.

Lucy's words:

8/16 - lucy said cat

8/17 - lucy said duck

8/18 - first tooth making its way in!

September 2, 2004

today was evie's first day of school by herself. it

was funny because on tuesday she went with me and lucy

and my mom. she was so upset when it was over and kept

wanting to play school. she said to me "mommy, you

pretend to be ms davis and i'm evie." then she goes

"oh teacher, i will miss you so much when my mommy

takes me home!" so obviously she wasn't worried about

going! but then this morning she was a little anxious

and asked me to "please please stay with me". but once

we got to school she was happy as can be and had a

great time. then tonight we played kick ball, which

she loved!

lucy is crawling around all over, pulling up on

things, saying lots of "nenenene, dadadada" types of

things. she has the most wonderful smile and loves

toby so much, it's so cute. she has blonde hair, still

november 30th 2004
evie:
favorite color: orange
favorite food: sandwich
favorite dessert: ice cream
when grows up: i want to be a singer
favorite name: evie
favorite sport: soccer
doesn't like: "doing stuff when i poop in my pants", peppers
lucy:
walking about 10 steps or so (started first steps of walking 3 weeks before bday)
words:
horse, cheese, hot, dada, mama, hi, bye, book, mouse, duck, head, boot, animal noises: owl, lion, fish, snake, dog
april 25, 2005
lucy: lucy is 17 1/2 months old. she is very happy and loves following her big sister around. she is also incredibly verbal - she knows her alphabet, can count to 10, can say sentences "daddy clean messy" (b was cleaning up spilled pickles in the kitchen). or we saw a rolly bug outside and she kept saying "rolly", "outside", "ball", "see". she is obsessed with elmo (elmo song) and she always wants us to draw sesame street characters. she loves her stuffed octopus.
evie: evie is 3 1/2. she is a great big sister and always helps take care of lucy. she is excited to be a "big big" sister this fall. she loves school and is currently obsessed with bugs and will tell anyone who asks, "i'm an entymologist." she carries her bug book everywhere and loves looking under stumps and rocks to find bugs. recent funny things she said: while talking aboug toby's parents, toby said "well, nothing is black and white" and evie looks at us and goes, "cows are black and white."

10.7.05
lucy is 23 months old. she is saying everything! the

other day, we were driving and she goes "mama, i want

to fly in the clouds and you hold me." she and evie

are playing so much. every morning they come into bed

and hide under the covers from monsters...

evie is four. she is getting taller and older every

day. she can write all of her letters and has suddenly

gotten really good at drawing.

october 27, 2005: tonight evie read a few words from a

book: run, fun, big and red. very exciting! she will

be reading soon. now she spends hours in her room

"writing" and drawing, so i'm sure she will love when

she can truly read to herself.

lulu wakes up everymorning saying "mama teletubby,

daddy tellytubby, evie tellytubby, lucy tellytubby".

she loves imagining and pretending things.

1.8.2006

funny things they have done recently:

today at church, the

kids were supposed to think of where they go in their imagination to be

happy and then draw a picture of it. evie held up her picture of "chuck

e. cheese" in front of the church and everyone laughed. it was very

cute.

the other day i talked to lucy about the new baby and

how when lucy was born, she came out naked. she looked at me and said

"actually mommy i had my pajamas on."

the girls have been playing together so well recently, they entertain each other constantly
